Brilliant colors of cherry blossoms in Điện Biên

ĐBP - On a small island nestled in the heart of Pá Khoang Lake within Mường Phăng commune, thousands of Japanese cherry blossom trees have been successfully cultivated, transforming the area into a captivating eco-tourism destination during the early days of the year.

Under the golden sunlight and clear blue skies, the vibrant pink blossoms stand out against the vast undulating waves, attracting a large number of residents as well as domestic and international tourists who come to admire the scenery.

Although these cherry blossoms are the symbolic flower of Japan, for many years now, a small island in Pá Khoang Lake has bloomed with thousands of trees as winter ends and spring begins. The cherry blossoms in Điện Biên typically reach full bloom from late December of the previous year through the end of January. While the first trees were brought to Điện Biên province for planting in 2006, it took approximately ten years for the trees to grow stably and form a forest community before the site officially became a major tourist attraction.

The flower island blooms brilliantly with cherry blossoms every spring.

The individual responsible for successfully breeding and domesticating these “standard Japanese” cherry blossoms in Điện Biên is biologist Trần Lệ. In 2006, starting with only ten seeds gifted by a friend at the Japanese Embassy, he conducted experimental planting on the island. After years of research and care, Trần Lệ has successfully developed a cherry blossom island with approximately 100,000 trees. Experts evaluate these as authentic Japanese varieties that have adapted remarkably well to the local natural conditions.

According to Trần Lệ, Pá Khoang Lake is situated at an altitude of about 1,000m above sea level with cold, humid winters and cool summers. The significant temperature difference between day and night is highly suitable for the growth of many temperate plant species. Currently, he and his associates continue to research and test new cherry varieties along with other flowers such as tulips, mimosa, and orchids to diversify the landscape of the Mường Phăng region.

Alongside the efforts of the individual scientist, Điện Biên province has also focused on expanding the cherry blossom planting area. The locality received an additional 1,000 trees donated by a Vietnam-Japan friendship organization. To modernize management, the Trần Lệ Cherry Blossom Joint Stock Company collaborated with the Viettel Điện Biên Branch to implement traceability codes for the trees. This allows visitors to easily find information about each forestry and agricultural product through their smartphones.

Today, the flower island has become a familiar destination. From the center of Điện Biên Phủ, visitors travel about 25km through winding roads and mountain passes to reach the site. As one approaches the island amidst the blue water, the brilliant pink of the blossoms is easily recognizable. Although the weather in early spring is chilly, the abundance of sunlight is favorable for sightseeing and picnic activities. The island appears like a shimmering pink gem, bringing a poetic and fresh feeling to every visitor.

The 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival, themed “Mường Phăng in Spring - Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom,” attracts many tourists and local people to visit and enjoy the flowers.

At the Pá Khoang flower island, visitors can admire nearly 20 different varieties of cherry blossoms with shades ranging from white and pink to deep red. Beyond photography, the site offers activities such as camping on flower-lined paths and boat tours of the lake’s various islets. Those interested in local culture can enjoy ethnic cuisine at the Che Căn community-based tourism village or visit the nearby Mường Phăng forest and the historical Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Headquarters.

To effectively exploit this tourism potential, Mường Phăng commune organizes an annual Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival features lively activities including the “Flavors of Mường Phăng” culinary competition, the display of local OCOP products, and cultural spaces dedicated to both ethnic traditions and Japanese rituals. Through this event, the local government aims to popularize the image of the commune as an attractive destination while calling for investment to further develop services and improve the lives of the people.

Vũ Thảo Giang, a tourist from Hà Nội, expressed surprise at seeing so many Japanese cherry blossoms on an island in Vietnam, noting that the colors were exceptionally vibrant. Looking ahead to the 2026–2030 period, Trần Văn Tuấn, Chairman of the Mường Phăng commune people’s committee, stated that the commune strives to plant 50,000 cherry trees. In 2026 alone, the plan is to plant 10,000 trees to create a green landscape and a unique ecological highlight for the region. The cherry blossom season serves as a signal of spring, opening a succession of beautiful flower seasons in the Northwest mountains.
